Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum on National Tour
Major Western Art Exhibit To Visit Amarillo Area
Capturing Western Legends: Russell and Remington's Canadian Frontier Runs From May 29-August 21, 2005

For the first time in recent memory, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum will host a major touring exhibit of international note.

Capturing Western Legends: Russell and Remington's Canadian Frontier, an exhibit organized by the Glenbow Museum of Calgary, Alberta, will visit the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum from May 29 to August 21, 2005. It will be the only U.S exhibit site west of the Mississippi River.

For the first time ever, Capturing Western Legends brings together the art and stories of the Canadian western frontier in a remarkable major exhibition featuring the works of Charles Russell (1864-1926) and Frederic Remington (1861-1909). Russell and Remington created legendary images that continue to define the Old West today. These two artists captured a moment in time and period of transition with the western frontier, and achieved unparallel success in the genre of western art. Their names are virtually synonymous in the popular imagination with iconic images of the West.

Exhibit visitors will explore the era of the North West frontier when the Blackfoot people roamed the landscape, the fur trade was a dominant industry; and the ranching industry straddled the borders between Alberta and Montana.

This will be a rare opportunity for fans of Western art because many of the paintings in this exhibit are from private collections and have never been seen before in a public exhibition.

"The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas. But this exhibit confirms that we are a major cultural institution for the state, with one of the best art departments and permanent art collections in Texas. We are very proud to bring this exhibition, which blends art and history, to the area and to Texas," Guy C. Vanderpool, Director of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, says.

"This is the most important art exhibit ever to come to the Texas Panhandle," according to Michael Grauer, Curator of Art at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum..

Additionally, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum has chosen "The American West" as its exhibit theme for 2005. Textiles, firearms, art, and history exhibits will explore the many facets of the American West. Educational programming will also focus on the history of the West.

Capturing Western Legends will be a ticketed event. Cost of the tickets will be $15 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-12, $14 seniors age 65 and over. Tickets are available through PanhandleTickets at 806-378-3096 or www.panhandletickets.com.

The PPHM is honored to be chosen by the Glenbow to be part of this outstanding touring exhibit.
