Summer's Almost Over
Amarillo's Top Exhibits/Attractions Close Soon
For most of Texas, there's only one month left before school starts. That leaves just a month to see some of the most exciting one-time exhibits and attractions in Amarillo.
When August 21 comes, several big attractions will close.
The last performance of Texas Legacies, the annual outdoor musical drama produced in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, is Saturday night, August 20. This wraps up the 40th anniversary of outdoor drama in the canyon. More than 3 million have seen an outdoor drama in Palo Duro Canyon- why not you?
The world-class exhibit, "Capturing Western Legends," shuts its doors at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum Sunday evening, August 21. More than 75 original works of art by noted Western Artists Charles Russell and Frederic Remington, as well as many artifacts from that time, will be sent back to lending institutions and private collections in the U.S. and Canada, perhaps never again to be seen in one location.
The Amarillo Museum of Art will shutter its first competitive exhibit in more than a decade. The last day for the exhibit "Amarillo 600 Biennial: Drawing," is also Sunday, August 21. More than 50 works of art from contemporary artists in Austin, Denver, Santa Fe and Phoenix (in fact, anywhere within 600 miles of Amarillo), will be returned after this acclaimed show. Better yet, the Amarillo Museum of Art is free.
Other Amarillo favorites will also be getting ready to close for the season.
Elkins Ranch Cowboy Morning, the world-famous chuck wagon breakfast served on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon, will remain open for breakfast, demand permitting, through September. Call first to double-check your desired date of visit.
Wonderland Amusement Park, Amarillo's small jewel of an amusement park, will switch from daily operation to weekend operation after August 14. And the park will close for the season at the end of business on Labor Day, Monday, September 5.
Similarly, Splash Amarillo will reduce operations in mid-August and will close for the season after Labor Day.
While you're in town, remember to see the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center and Museum, the Don Harrington Discovery Center, the Big Texan Steak Ranch and Historic Route 66.
